Out of Manali through the Atal Tunnel and into Spiti's high desert: Key and Dhankar monasteries, fossil villages above Kaza, and the rough, beautiful road over Kunzum La to camp beside Chandratal lake. The unpaved stretches are exactly why this one is done by 4x4.

East from Leh onto the Changthang plateau, past Tso Moriri and the dark-sky reserve at Hanle, to stand at 5,882 metres on Umling La. The altitude is the hard part, not the driving, so the pace is slow, acclimatisation is built in and oxygen travels in every vehicle.
